Creating a CD in Windows XP

Writing a CD in Windows XP

Using Windows XP, files cannot be modified directly on the CD, even if using a CD-RW. To edit files, save the contents of the CD to your hard drive (C:), erase the CD, and re-write the updated files to the CD. To modify files directly on the CD (i.e. to update a document with changes from Microsoft Word), use Roxio's Direct CD format utility.

  • Insert a writeable CD into the CD-RW drive.
  • Drag-and-drop or copy and paste the files to be written to the CD onto the CD (either through the drive letter in Windows Explorer or My Computer).
  • From the CD's file menu, select "Write these files to CD".
  • When prompted, type a name for the CD.
  • Once finished, a prompt appears. Select wither copy the same files to another CD, or click "finish" if there are no more CD's to create with these files.

Erasing a CD in Windows XP

  • Insert the CD into the CD-RW drive.
  • From the file menu of the CD drive, select "Erase this CD".
