CD-R and CD-RW

There are two types of recordable media that are used for making your own CDs:

  • CD-R discs (CD-Recordable)
  • CD-RW discs (CD-ReWritable)

When to Use CD-R Discs

Virtually all CD-ROM and CD-Recorder drives can read CD-R discs. CD-R discs are excellent for permanent data storage and should be used when you do not need to erase the data. They are less expensive per CD than CD-RW discs.

When to Use CD-RW Discs

CD-RW discs can only be used in CD-ReWritable drives and MultiRead CD-ROM drives. You cannot play a music CD made on a CD-RW disc in most home or car stereo CD players. Here are some ideas for using CD-RW discs: Use when you need to write, erase, rewrite, and update your files on CD.

Creating a Data CD via "DirectCD"

(DirectCD prepares a CD-Recordable (CD-R), or CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) disc so you can directly copy files to it in much the same way that you copy files to a floppy disk or removable drive. You can then use Windows Explorer, or any other program that can read from and write to a drive letter, to copy files to a CD. You can also recover files from and repair damaged CDs. Do not use directCD if you want to create a music CD. DirectCD requires that the CD be formatted by directCD with the UDF v.1.5 file system, which takes approximately 10-18 minutes on a new CD.

  1. Click "Start", click "Programs", click "Roxio Easy CD Creator 5".
  2. Choose "Project Selector" from the drop-down menu.
  3. There are now two options for creating your data CD. The first option is "directCD" and the second is "dataCD project". Choose "directCD."
  4. If your CD is not already formatted with the UDF v.1.5 file system by directCD, then choose format CD. (This only needs to be done once)
  5. You will be asked to name the CD, so type in a name of your choosing that helps you distinguish this CD from others you already have or may have in the future. Check "enable compression", and click "start format."
  6. After the format is complete, you will get a notification from directCD that your CD is now ready for use. You can save directly to the CD from applications such as Microsoft Word, or drag and drop files from other locations, as long as your CD is in a CD-Recordable/Rewriteable drive. (Drive "E:" on public machines in the library).
