Thomson, Rosemarie Garland. Extraordinary bodies: figuring physical disability in American culture and literature. New York: Columbia University Press, 1997.
[PS374 .P44 T49 1997]

This book is a groundbreaking exploration of the literary and cultural representations of physical disability in America. It focuses on physical disability as a social construction rather than as a medical condition through the examination of diverse cultural representations such as the works of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Toni Morrison along with the 19th and early 20th century phenomenon of freak shows. There is particular emphasis on the portrayal of disabled women and feminist theory in regard to the body and disability.
