Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema
[REF PN1993.5 I8R34 1994x]

India is by far the world's largest producer of motion pictures -- over 700 new films per year -- yet this massive output is largely unknown outside of South Asia and the Indian diaspora. This book covers the entire array of Indian films, which have been produced in over fifty languages -- the primary ones being Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. The first part contains biographies and filmographies of actors, directors, composers, and lyric writers (almost all Indian films are musicals). The second part is an annotated survey of the major films by year, 1910-1992. The index is perhaps the most significant part of the book, as it is a listing of all films produced in India and provides the title, director, language, and year. For more information ask at the Reference Desk on the second floor of the Park Library building, or call 989 -774-3470.

American Cultural Pluralism and the Law. 2nd ed.
[Books KF4755 .N67 1996]

This book written by a political scientist and an anthropologist takes a look at the dynamics of court proceedings which the authors believe have been the main arena for negotiating the values of the dominant culture and society's subcultures. Although issues of current interest are included, the book is primarily historical in focus. Topics are grouped into 4 categories race, religion, gender, and community. The history of legal interaction is reviewed for each group within these categories and major cases are cited. The book's unique contribution is that it includes groups not typically discussed such as Hawaiians, Mormons, the Amish, the Rastafari and the homeless.
