African-American Resources

The African-American Mosaic: A Library of Congress Resource Guide for the Study of Black History and Culture
This on-line exhibit contains select resources from the print version of The African-American Mosaic. Areas covered are Colonization, Abolition, Migrations, and the WPA.

African American Odyssey
This exhibit showcases the African American collections in the Library of Congress including rare books, government documents, maps, films, and recordings.

African-American Perspectives: Pamphlets from the Daniel A.P. Murray Collection 1818-1907
From the Library of Congress, African-American Perspectives includes a timeline of African-American History, and the full-text of 351 titles including sermons, college catalogs, biographies, legal documents, and poetry.

Afro-American Almanac
The AFRO-American Almanac ® is an on-line  presentation of the African in America. A historical perspective of a nation, its people, and its cultural evolution. From the beginning of the slave trade through the Civil Rights movement, to the present. This site includes biographies, full-text documents, historical information, and more.

This award winning site sponsored by the Afro-American Newspaper Company of Baltimore has links to culture, history, news, etc.

Black Quest Power Links
This rich resource of links covering a multitude of topics is based on the CD game Black Quest, the brainchild of C. Arthur Blair who conceived and created the game.
This game is a result of Mr. Blair's approximate twenty (20) years of interest, research and
collecting of Black American artifacts.

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit Michigan, the world's largest Black historical and cultural museum,  is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of African and African American history and culture.

Harlem 1900-1940: An African-American Community
Harlem 1900-1940: An African-American Community , is a history education portfolio that has been produced by the Educational Programs unit of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the New York Public Library.

Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
The Schomburg Center is a national research library which collects, preserves, and provides access to resources documenting the experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world. The Schomburg web site offers information about the Center, as well as on-line exhibits and links to select Internet resources.

Country Studies
From the Library of Congress, this site currently offers on-line versions of studies of 71 countries. Studies are prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Are Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army.

ADA Home Page
This searchable web site from the U.S. Department of Justice contains a myriad of information regarding the ADA including status reports, settlement information, and technical assistance materials.

Americans with Disabilities Act Document Center
This website contains copies of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 documents, as well as links to information concerning disability issues and legal issues concerning occupational health and safety and Total Quality Management.

Blindness Resource Center
A major collection of disability links from the New York Institute for Special Education.

Disability Statistics Center
From the University of California, San Fransisco, the DSC web site contains statistical information on disability and the status of people with disabilities.

Family Village
A global community that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for persons with cognitive and other disabilities, for their families, and for those that provide them services and support. This site includes informational resources on specific diagnoses, communication connections, adaptive products and technology, adaptive recreational activities, education, worship, health issues, disability-related media and literature, and much more.

National Federation of the Blind
The National Federation of the Blind is the largest organization of the blind in America.  Interested sighted persons also join.  Founded in 1940, the Federation has grown to include more than ten percent of the nation's blind (over 50,000 members).

Special Olympics
Special Olympics is a nonprofit program of sports training and competition for individuals with mental retardation. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides year-round training and athletic competition for more than one million athletes in nearly 150 countries and all 50 states in the United States.

DiversityWeb offers a compendium of Recommended Resources designed for campus practitioners, from faculty members and administrators to student leaders and graduate students. The Recommended Resources include syllabi, models for faculty development and other materials to help campus practitioners create an environment where diversity is considered part of an on-going commitment to excellence.

Multicultural Pavilion
This site provides resources for educators to explore and discuss multicultural education; to
facilitate opportunities for educators to work toward self-awareness and development; and to provide forums for educators to interact and collaborate toward a critical, transformative approach to multicultural education.

The goal of this site is to serve the worldwide bisexual community by providing a free Internet presence for bisexual individuals, groups and non-profit organizations. The site also contains a large set of pages detailing resources including groups, organizations, magazines, and Internet newsgroups.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of individuals and events in all media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

GayZoo
Modeled after Yahoo, Gayzoo is a search engine for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Internet community.

Lesbian.org
A selective list of lesbian web sites related to politics and activism, arts and culture, and other issues.

LGBT/Queer Studies Resources
Compiled by the National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education, this guide site is a good starting point for social sciences scholars who are interested in finding out more more information about queer studies.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Health
A part of the Seattle & King County's Public Health site, these webpages address the health concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, in other words, "sexual minorities." This government website also has links to important information on such issues related to GLBT health as alcoholism, tobacco and smoking, drugs, domestic violence, depression, safety and hate crimes, and psychotherapy.
