Excludes "film related topics." International coverage of journals, reports and books. Author and subject located at the back of each issue. Refer to the abstract citation numbers (not page numbers).

A Directory of Women's Media, 17th Edition, 1994
A valuable source of information about the women's media network, the primary aim of which is to improve access to material by for and about women. Several categories and the number of items described include: Periodicals (980), Presses/Publishers (94), News Services (6), Radio/TV (36), Film/Video/Tape (30), Music (40), Theater/Dance/Multimedia (22), Art/Crafts (23), Writer's Groups (14), Distributors (16), Media Organizations (34) and a number of other categories. Indexed by publication title, name of organization, and names of individuals. There is also a County and State index.

Henritze, Barbara. Bibliographic Checklist of African American Newspapers, 1995.
Contains a checklist of African American newspapers identified in more than one hundred resources. Lists 5,539 newspapers and assorted periodicals that have served Americans of African descent, being owned, published , edited, and/or read predominantly by African Americans in forty-four states and the District of Columbia. Also includes African American bibliographies, yearbooks and several specifically African American newspaper sources.

Published every five years. Volume 1 contains tables of contents for 19 journal titles from their inception to 1990. Volume 2 comprises contributor, classified and keyword indexes. There is considerable overlap with Communication Abstracts, but is more convenient for retrospective searching.

Though a bit dated, this source remains the most comprehensive listing of sources for research on mass communication.

Almanacs

The African American Almanac, 7th Edition, 1997.
Consists of twenty-seven topical chapters that cover significant documents in African American history, civil rights, demography, artists, writers and academics, media, biography, etc. Includes photographs, tables, and a selected bibliography. The Media chapter includes African American newspapers, publishers and television and radio stations. Includes many World Wide Web sites (though some are now inactive).

The Hispanic-American Almanac: A Reference Work on Hispanics in the United States, 1993.
Consists of twenty-five topical chapters which detail the contributions of Hispanics to American culture, including history, business, literature, art, theater, media, film, etc. Includes a useful chronology, bibliography, and subject index.

The Native North American Almanac: A Reference Work on Native North Americans in the United States and Canada, 1994.
Consists of seventeen topical chapters, including demography, major culture areas, literature, media, biography, etc. Some chapters include bibliographies. Includes a general bibliography and a subject index as well as an index of occupations organized by tribe. The Media chapter includes Native American newspapers (tribal, confederation, national, state, provincial, regional), magazines, academic journals, and radio, television, and theater organizations.

Electronic Sources

Ethnic News Watch, 1990-
CD-ROM database containing the complete text of more than 250,000 articles, editorials, and reviews published in nearly 180 ethnic and minority newspapers, magazines, and journals published in the United States. Provides viewpoints on current events and issues from the perspectives of African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos, Native Americans, Asians, Jewish, Arab, and European Americans. May be searched in either English or Spanish.
CD-ROM (Inquire at Reference Desk, Library 2nd floor.) 

FirstSearch, (Years vary by database.) An interactive on-line reference system available through the Internet on the World Wide Web, accessible via the Libraries' homepage. Provides information about journal articles, films, computer software, and other materials. The 60+ databases span all subject areas. The Libraries' workstations are set up for immediate access to FirstSearch through Netscape. Faculty, staff, and students who wish to access FirstSearch from a remote location should contact the reference desk to obtain an authorization number and password.

World Wide Web Resources

Millions of individual web sites are accessible from a variety of search engines, which include Excite, Lycos, Yahoo, and others. One highly recommended search engine is MetaCrawler which is available via the Libraries' homepage by clicking on the Additional Internet Resources button, scrolling down and clicking on Search Engines, and then clicking on MetaCrawler. Once into MetaCrawler, click in the search bar, type in the appropriate keyword or keywords and start the search.
