Industry Analysis Assignment

Below you will find a problem statement which explains the context of the questions. Make a hardcopy (print copy) of the questions and write your answers on the hardcopy. Beneath the questions there are a series of sources listed which are to be used for answering the questions. (Hint: the sources needed to answer the questions are listed in the same order as the the questions, e.g. use the first source to answer question number 1.)

When you have completed all of the questions, give the questions and answers to your instructor. Your instructor will give you a due date for the assignment.



Problem: Your company manufactures pharmaceutical preparations and has 57 employees. In 2001 they shipped out $137,000,000 worth of preparations. They want to compare their company to the total industry. You have been assigned to complete this project. You know that much of the information on industries is organized by industry classification codes, so you must first identify the codes for your industry.

Questions
  1. What is the SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) and NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) number for "Pharmaceutical Preparations"? (Hint: Once you have received a list of records/results, click on the "kwic" tab to get a summary of your search terms in context.)




  2. a) What was the total value of shipments of pharmaceutical preparations, except biologicals, for 2001? (Hint: Use the tables for annual data. Also note the monetary units in brackets at the top of the tables.)



    b) The value of your company's shipments were what percent of total shipments?



  3. In the "industry series" reports of the 1997 Economic Census get a complete list of reports for manufacturing. Using the NAICS number for pharmaceuticals (the second half of the report number), find the report for pharmaceutical prepations then locate "table no. 4", "Industry Statistics by Employment Size" and answer the following question.

    What were the total capital expenditures for pharmaceutical preparation mfg companies with 50 to 99 employees?
