The industry analysis resource guide provides information about
the sources you will use to complete the industry analysis assignment. The assignment
focuses on sources used to define characteristics of a specific industry or
type of product. You will look at three sources which are
detailed below.
After you have finished reviewing the information in the resource guide you
can proceed directly to the industry
analysis assignment or you can go to one or more of the guides listed below.
SIC Directory The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) was the statistical classification standard underlying all establishment-based federal economic statistics classified by industry. It has now been replaced by the NAICS. These classifications cover the entire field of economic activity and define industries in accordance with the composition and structure of the economy.
U. S. Census Bureau: Current Industrial Reports is a series of over
100 reports on different manufacturing industries. Each report has a series
number beginning with M (for manufactures) and a letter giving the frequency
of the report (M alone is monthly). The numbers are based on the SIC/NAICS classifications.
1997 Economic Census Data is the latest Economic Census published by
the U. S. Census Bureau. The economic census is taken every five years with
the 2002 census currently underway. Millions of businesses receive forms
asking for information about business activity.
