1. Donations of materials to be considered for inclusion in the
university library collection are welcome from faculty, emeriti,
students, alumni, staff, and community members.
2. Materials that are donated to the university library become
the property of the library.
3. Donated materials are reviewed by the relevant subject bibliographer(s).
Decisions to accept donated materials into the university library
collection are based on the criteria in the current collection development
policy for the relevant subject area(s).
4. Material that does not fit the scope and focus of the collection
development policy is not added to the collection. These items may
be included in the Friends of the Libraries Book Sale, forwarded
to dealers for resale, sent to the CMU general auction, or discarded,
at the library's discretion.
5. Gifts of periodicals are not accepted in lieu of the purchase
of subscriptions by the university library. Gift periodicals are
accepted to replace missing or defaced issues. Periodicals not needed
in the collection may be sent to a periodicals exchange dealer.
6. Please see Procedures
for Donating Library Materials for more information.
1. Fill out the Donation of Library Materials Form.
2. Bring the materials and the form to any public service desk in the library.
3. If the materials are too large to carry in, please contact the Head of Collection Development at 989-774-6421 or casey1am @cmich.edu to arrange for a time for a staff member to meet you at the loading dock and assist you with transferring the material to the library.
4. IRS regulations do not allow an institution receiving a gift in kind to value that gift for tax purposes. Please list the approximate value of the donated materials on the Donation of Library Materials Form. If the value is $5000 or more, please attach a written appraisal to the form.
