Administrative law includes the regulations created by various government agencies used to administer the activities within their jurisdiction.

Federal Regulations
  • Federal Register
The Federal Register is the official source used to notify the public of proposed, temporary, amended and final regulations having general applicability and legal effect, documents required to be published by an act of Congress, federal agency documents of public interest, meeting notices, and Presidential proclamations and executive orders.
The CMU Libraries has access to three versions:

    1. Federal Register
Office of the Federal Register, National Archives and Records Service, General Services Administration.
      Law KF70 A2 (current volumes)
Gov Docs Microfilm AE 2.106: (backfiles)

    2. Federal Register-CIS Congressional Universe
Search on separate forms by keyword, FR citation or CFR citation. This version is particularly useful when searching for a specific citation. It uses the same keyword search operators as Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. Dates back to 1980.

    3. Federal Register-Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
Select "federal regulations." Offers keyword and citation searching to both the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations on the same form. This form allows the greatest flexibility when doing keyword searches. It uses the same keyword search operators as CIS Congressional Universe. Dates back to 1980.

  • Code of Federal Regulations
The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a codification (subject arranged version) of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government.
The CMU Libraries has access to four versions:

    1. Code of Federal Regulations
U.S. General Services Administration, National Archives and Records Service, Office of the Federal Register.
      Law KF70 A2 (current volumes)

    2. Code of Federal Regulations-National Archives and Records Administration
This version allows the user to browse individual titles and the corresponding tables of contents. Specific citations can be found by using the special citation search form or by using the phrase (" ") search capability on the keyword form. Dates back to 1996.

    3. Code of Federal Regulations-CIS Congressional Universe
Select "regulations" and search on separate forms by keyword, CFR citation or statutory authority (US Code citation). This version is particularly useful when searching for a specific citation. The citation must specify a specific part number, or if searching for an entire section you must specify the year of passage. It uses the same keyword search operators as Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. Dates back to 1981.

    4. Code of Federal Regulations-Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
Select "legal research" then select "federal regulations." Offers keyword and citation searching to both the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register on the same form. This form allows the greatest flexibility when doing keyword searches. It uses the same keyword search operators as CIS Congressional Universe (current information only).
