Selected Online Photojournalism Resources
These websites serve as a good starting point for information relating to photojournalism. Each one of the sites presents a wealth of historical information, plus numerous links to other very useful photojournalism-related websites.
- Library of Congress The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution, and it serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 120 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 18 million books, 2.5 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.5 million maps, and 54 million manuscripts. The Library's mission is to make its resources available and useful to the Congress and all American citizens. Of particular interest is the "American Memory" section.
- NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) One of the first journalists' organizations to get on the Web, the NPPA actively promotes photographic Web sites. Their home page will take you to lots of other interesting sites.
- Michigan Press Photographers Association (MPPA) The Michigan Press Photographers Association is a 200-plus member organization, comprised of working still and student Photojournalists from throughout Michigan.
- American Museum of Photography A tour de force of exhibits representing the history of photography in the United States. An excellent and beautifully executed site. Geared more to fine art photography than to photojournalism, but check its set of links.
- Walker Evans Project (Walker Evans Revolutionizes Documentary Photography) The objective of this project is to show how Walker Evans' photographs, taken in the 1930's, portrayed a realistic view of the poverty-stricken rural south, revolutionized the standards of documentary photography. An employee of the Farm Services Administration during the Depression, Evans produced some of the most powerful images of America that have ever been created.
- Global Photographers Search A very useful general photography site that includes sections for photo industry suppliers advertising agencies, art/creative directors, etc. Also includes discussion/chat rooms and photographic forums.
- Black Star One of the premier stock photo agencies online.
- World Press Photo This English-language Dutch site features prize-winning press photographs.
- Life Magazine Life in its heyday was the greatest photo magazine publishing weekly. It's trying to recapture some of that glory with a monthly and a lot of nostalgia. It now offers some good features and a good sense of the history of photojournalism.
- Digital Journalist Maintained by photographer Dirck Halstead, this site is billed as "a multimedia magazine for photojournalism in the digital age."
- International Center of Photography The ICP is a museum, a school and a center for photographers and photography. Its mission is to present photography's important place in contemporary culture.
- The Daguerreian Society An important historical photographic site "dedicated to the history, science and art of the daguerreotype."
- Albumen Photographs: History, Science and Preservation "The site features 19th century primary source materials, contemporary research, a gallery, and video of albumen print manufacture. In addition, there is an interactive treatment forum for conservators to discuss preservation issues pertaining to albumen photographs." Includes useful links.
